The drug is given as a prescription medication to people who have developed mild to severe urinating problem. There can be different types of trimethoprim side effects on those people who are under its treatment. The importance of the drug is mainly seen in the way it works to expel the bacteria from the urinary tract.
In other words, trimethoprim acts as inhibitors for the bacteria to absorb folic acid from the body and thus its growth is significantly reduced. It is generally seen that although the urine may contain a lot of waste products there is no bacteria in it.
How does the medication work?
Trimethoprim is an antibiotic drug used for the treatment of propylaxis and urinary tract infections. The drug is widely in use and is also used for the treatment of certain types of pneumonia and diarrhea. The drug has side effects which has to be treated promptly otherwise may become serious.
- Side Effects of Trimethoprim
It is generally seen that there is no bacteria in the urine which otherwise expels fluids, salts and waste products of the body system. However, sometimes the bacteria do enter the urinary and cause all the trouble. It gets into the bladder, and then goes into the kidney and of course into the urine too. In the urine these bacteria starts to multiply at a fast rate and this in turn brings forth the urinary tract infection.
Trimethoprin side effects are caused when these bacteria are treated and the medication starves the bacteria as it disallows these microorganisms to take folic acid from the environment of the system. When this happen the bacteria is forced out though the urine and there is no more trouble from them again. Apart from this the medication is also used for other purposes and this depends upon the discretion of the doctor.
Unusual advantage of trimethoprim
The medicine is either used alone or with other medicine and this is more so with the treatment of pneumonia where other drugs combined with trimethoprim are suggested by the doctor. Further, the drug is also used for treating traveler’s diarrhea. Here, in all these cases the trimethoprim expels or inhibit the working of bacteria. This means that the medicine which is an antibiotic is not effective for treatment of flu, common cold or other viral infections.
Trimethoprim side effects are caused if the medication is not taken as per the instruction of the doctor. In fact, the medication must be taken on empty stomach either an hour before food intake or after two hours of food intake. However, some people due to their body conditions experience nausea or vomiting and have slight difficulty in swallowing it with water and they may be allowed to take the same with food. However, the doctor’s advice is the best in these cases.
There is another precondition for the intake of this medicine and that is the people affected by infection must drink at least 8 glasses of liquid every day for dissolving the medicine properly. Once dissolved it can dispel and reduce the bacteria in the urinary tract without much of a problem. The liquid may consist of anything from ordinary water, milk, coffee, tea, soft drinks, and fruit juices as one would wish and should be taken every single day.
The doctor whom the patient is consulting must be told about the allergies he has to the consumption of trimethoprim. Besides, he should tell whether he or she is taking any sulfa drugs or whether it is diuretics like a diabetic medicine or water pills or any other drugs. The doctor would look into the list and would either ask the patient to stop taking the drug or combine the same with other medications.
Here are the main Trimethoprim side effects
In a previous post, I have talked about the zopiclone side effects. The most noticeable side effects of trimethoprim vary according to the physical health of the patients. There are several instance of stomach becoming upset by the intake of the medicine. This is quite reasonable as most drugs have some or the other side effects and their intake may or may not be in conformity with their body’s reaction to it. Stomach upset can be caused by the reaction that comes by the cleaning efforts of the bacteria in the urine by the drug. Some people show signs of vomiting and this too is so because the stomach is connected to the esophagus where any side effects can eject fluid out of the system by way of vomiting.
The case of diarrhea has been reported often in the intake of the medicine. Then there are complains about the formation of rash, itching, fever and sore throat. Among the serious ones it is worth mentioning that diarrhea which is watery is definitely a serious one and the patient must be taken to the doctor at once. The emergency cases are those like headaches with severe blistering, red skin rash, easily bruised skin surface and feeling short of breath. The list of trimethoprim side effects are more and in all such cases medication is very important.
