Ramipril Side Effects

The medication is prescribed under emergency conditions and being a potent drug it has a few ramipril side effects. It is an angiotensin converting enzyme used for the treatment of congestive heart failure and high blood pressure. As high blood pressure has the tendency to affect an otherwise normally functioning heart it is imperative for the patient to take it assuming that the doctor is well aware of his or hers past illness or diseases.

The main function of the ACE inhibitors is to lower the production of angiotensin II and also decreasing the breakdown of bradykinin. The abbreviation ACE stands for angiotensin converting enzymes as known in the medical circles.

ACE inhibitors with some difference

As a drug ramipril is used as an angiotensin converting enzyme. It is mainly used for treating high blood pressures in patients, heart failure and also to improve the chances of survival after a heart attack. The medication is administered mainly inside the hospital environment and has mild to serious side effects.

The net affect of the function is to relax the arterial muscles after nearly stopping the breakdown of bradykinin and lowering the growth of certain chemicals. These chemicals if let alone puts up pressure on the heart and thereby making the heart work even harder. The affect of the breakdown of bradykinin enables the relaxing of arterial muscles and enlarging the arteries and thereby allowing the heart to effortlessly continue the pumping of blood.

Ramipril’s effect on bradykin is also responsible for the dry cough side effect. Also due to more blood being pumped into and through the arteries there is better functioning of the whole body system. Ramipril side effects are important to take note of such that there is no adverse action of the same on the patient. The medication is one of the most preferable drugs for the medical practitioners as it can be used effectively to improve survival of the patient from a heart attack.

Can ramipril effectively check hypertensions?

Hypertensions are caused by high blood pressure and there is only a thin line of difference between life and death in patients who cannot cope up to this effect. In such cases the ramipril capsule is prescribed by the doctor to give the much needed relief by allowing the blood flow to the arteries of the heart. Ramipril however affects the bradykin and is thus responsible for the dry cough of the patients.

The dry cough symptom is one of the few side effects of the medication and must be removed or discomfort will prevail during such times. The doctor can prescribe another drug if he or she may prefer so.

In some cases ramipril is to be avoided as this may create far reaching side effects on the patients. The doctor has to be consulted especially in case the patient is consuming alcohol on a daily basis. The patient during the treatment with ramipril should not take salt substitutes or potassium supplements.

During low blood pressure the doctor may not allow the intake of this medication. Frequent check ups are suggested especially to monitor the patient’s blood pressure levels, kidney or lever functions. Ramipril side effects can otherwise create unnecessary problem for the patient and great deal of discomforts can result out of it.

Taking diuretics or water pills should be avoided by patients taking this medication. If the patient has diabetes, connective tissue disease like the Marfan syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, lupus, scleroderma or rheumatoid arthritis then the medication is not given. This can create allergies and might react with other medication which the patient has been taking or is still taking.

The doctor in most of the above cases tries to moderate their effects by either administering a different variety of medicines or vary the dosage of ramipril. There is however immense relief to the patients when the medication is taken as it regularizes the heart beats as well as the blood pressure.

What are the Ramipril Side Effects

In a previous post, I have talked about amlodipine side effects. The intake of ramipril can cause less serious to high risk side effects and the doctor must be contacted as quickly as possible. Among the serious side effects is the feeling among some patients that they might pass out at any moment. Again, patients may suffer from high potassium levels in the body and these results in slow heart rate, weak pulse, weakness of the muscle and tingly feeling.

The doctor is the best person to monitor the patients and any self medication might result in death of the patient. Then there are dry mouth, thirst, confusion and swellings in parts of the body which is a definite indicator of side effects. Some patients are reported to urinate less than usual or none at all. Then the urine if it occurs at all looks very dark and among other side effects is the pale color of the skin, and the body being subject to easy bruising and bleeding.

Sometimes a patient may contract jaundice due to the intake of ramipril or develop fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms and sores in mouth and throat.

The less serious side effects are cough, tiredness, headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. There is little doubt that ramipril side effects have to be taken seriously by the patient and his or her family such that they do not form any sort of irreversible symptoms on the patient.
