Methotrexate Side Effects

In my previous post, I have elaborated on morphine side effects.

All effective treatment of cancer aims for decreasing the metabolic activities of folic acid of which methotrexate is surely one of the best. Methotrexate, or the abbreviation MTX as it is commonly referred to, is effective for treatment of several other diseases yet its methotrexate side effects can lead to complications.

The primary aim of the medication is to cut down cell division activities especially cells which reproduces rapidly. This ensures that the generally malignant cells are forced to fall in line and thus reduces the chance of spreading around the area. Apart from this the medicine is also used for treating arthritis.

Chemotherapy and other uses of MTX.

This particular class of drug is used as an antimetabolita and ant foliate medicine. It is therefore effective in the treatment of cancer and antoimmune diseases, ectopic pregnancy and for medical abortion. The drug has been developed for uses in chemotherapy either alone or in combination with one or more of other drugs. It has mild to severe side effects.

The drug has become an effective medicine for the treatment of various cancer causing illness and acts as a positive contributor for chemotherapy treatment in combination with other agents. Breast cancers, cancer of the neck and head, leukemia, lymphoma, lung cancer, osteosarcoma, bladder cancer, trophoblastic and neoplasm are some of which that react positively to the treatment by methotrexate.

Although the treatment on mild type of cancers or those at initial stages are quite effective there is however no guarantee that severe ones could be treated in an exceptional way. In cases of leukemia and lung cancer and other malignant types there is general relief to patients although death might be extended it cannot be stopped.

Due to this reason the medicine like all drugs for the treatment of cancer may not be an excellent curative for the disease. The medication again has its own methotrexate side effects and can create problems for patients if not taken properly.

Adverse effects of methotrexate on patients

Methotrexate is commonly administered in combination with misoprostol to terminate pregnancy in woman especially during the early stages. However, serious consequences can occur if it is taken or administered at later stages. In cases of ectoptic pregnancies the drug is used with very good effect.

Side Effects of Methotrexate

Its uses in the treatment of some autoimmune diseases are quite well known in the medical circles. For instance, it is an effective medication for treatment of chematoid arthritis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and Crohn’s disease.

It is seen that uses of penicillin is restricted while treatment through methotrexate is continuing. This is because methotrexate elimination is decreased and thus there is an increase in the risk of toxicity. However, the two have been administered together in some cases through proper routine monitoring by doctor on the patient.

It is a usual practice with doctors that instead of administering methotrexate straight away they try out other relatively less powerful medicines on the patient and only when the others have failed do they start with this drug. There are usually moderate to serious methotrexate side effects and the doctor should be consulted at once.

Methotrexate functions inside the body system with great efficacy. It blocks several enzymes from taking on their active roles within the immune system. This in turn jeopardizes the activities of the growing cells in the immune system and inhibits them from turning malignant. These cells are mainly those belonging to the skin, blood, stomach and intestines and the immune system.

Correct dosages of methotrexate are a must for any type of conditions. While the medication is being administered blood has to be checked at regular intervals or periods to monitor the effect of the medicine. In many cases the kidney and liver functions too are tested so as to get a fair idea of any allergic or reactionary affect on the patient’s body.

Methotrexate Side Effects

There are several side effects which the patient may suffer while taking methotrexate. Some of these are not felt by the patient immediately while others have immediate reaction on the patient’s body. The most common are ulcerative stomatitis, low white blood cell count, nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, fever and dizziness.

The low blood cell count in the system creates problems which appear in the form of infections. In rare cases some patients exhibit pulmonary fibrosis. As it is also used for terminating early stages of pregnancy it is dangerous to consume when the pregnancy is in advanced stage.

Males are requested to use condoms while they are taking methotrexate as there is increased risk of causing pregnancy to their spouses. The females too in turn are advised by doctors to use an effective form of birth control for at least one cycle of ovulation in order to avoid any serious problems. Males on the other hand should continue using condoms for 90 days even after their treatment with the drug ends.

The drug when used in the treatment of cancer actually inhibits the growth of certain cells which are harmful to the human body as they reproduce rapidly and cause methotrexate side effects.

Next, I will speak about low potassium side effects.
