Levothyroxine is used for the treatment of hypothyroidism in both male and female and should be medicated with caution. There are several levothyroxine side effects which may create conditions that are extremely uncomfortable for the patient. The medication is quite effective in most cases where the thyroid gland fails to produce sufficient hormone to keep the body’s energy and metabolism in perfect shape.
The drug is ineffective in reducing obesity although some people may think so. The actual fact is that the drug is wrongly associated with obesity and that some people lose their body weight due to the side effects of the drug and not otherwise.
What is levothyroxine all about?
Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of thyroid hormone administered in patients having thyroid hormone deficiency. The treatment is mainly given when the thyroid does not produce enough of it and also in cases where there is enlarged thyroid. The medications cannot be treated for obesity although it is one of the side effects of levothyroxine.
The drug which is essentially a prescription medication to be administered under the strict supervision of a doctor is very effective for the treatment of hypothyroidism. The most common case of hypothyroidism is iodine deficiency. However, it is seen that it can be due to other causes like the condition of the thyroid gland or related problems. Among the lesser causes that are to be found in patients are those related to pituary gland or in other words namely the hypothalamus.
In all such cases levothyroxin is given to augment the thyroid hormone. Levothyroxine side effects are extremely dangerous when it is taken along with amphetamines. So also the drug has severe side effects if taken with some drugs that have tendencies to react with it. Again, the medication can cause serious affect on patients with normal thyroid function when used in connection with obesity which they erroneously think would help them reduce weight.
Thyroid hormone treatment for hypothyroidism
The drug is formulated in synthetic compound and therefore it is mandatory for the patient and the doctor to take some precautionary steps before administering the medicine. The medication is usually avoided if the patient shows signs of allergy if the medicinal dose enters into the body system.
The drug should not be medicated if the person does not react well with other medicines. For instance, some patients may have allergy to a yellow dye used often in processed food and foods like lactose or corn starch. Here, the medicine creates problems making it extremely difficult for the doctor to continue with it.
The doctor must be continually apprised of the patient’s situation if the patient is regularly taking amphetamines or anti-coagulants. Further, the patient’s whole body system has to be monitored if he or she is taking ant-anxiety agents, arthritis medicine, aspirin, beta-blockers and medicines for diabetes.
Levothyroxine side effects can suddenly appear to haunt the patient and the doctor alike if regular check ups are not taken. These side effects can be seen through regular blood test and along with liver and kidney tests too. They are a basic requirement in cases with hypothyroidism when the medication is given to the patient. The medication is also used to prevent goiter which means an enlarged thyroid gland and the same is caused by hormone imbalances, radiation treatment, cancer or surgery.
It is very important to take the levothyroxine with a full glass of water as the tablet dissolves rather fast. In other words, the moment the tablet reaches the throat it will swell up causing temporary choking and gagging.
The medicine ought to be taken in empty stomach and this is done thirty minutes before eating. The drug is again usually taken in the morning yet some doctors might give a different time after ascertaining the condition of the patient.
What are the Levothyroxine Side Effects
In the previous post, I have discussed the coumadin side effects. There are several side effects that can be found among patients while they take levothyroxine tablets. Since, it takes the medicine several weeks for optimal performance there is no reason why the side effects shouldn’t appear immediately. Apart from weight loss the patient’s body can undergo tremors, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nervousness and irritability.
Some patients have complained as having insomnia due to the regular intake of the drug and have left them very weak. Reports of excessive sweating, changes in menstrual cycle of woman, fever, sensitivity to heat, increased appetite and temporary hair loss have also been detected.
The levothyroxine pills have to be taken for the rest of the life of the patient as he or she would have to replenish the thyroid hormone which their body refuses to produce in its natural form. This is not so for those patients whose body can produce some amount of thyroid hormone but isn’t sufficient enough for optimal performance.
However, in some extreme emergency cases when there is pain in the chest of the person or there is rapid or irregular heart beat or that of the pulse, then the patient is said to be in a critical condition. He or she must be admitted to the hospital at once for observation and further medication otherwise the levothyroxine side effects can result in death. Next, I will be talking about amitriptyline side effects.
