This drug is always used in cases of emergencies with fatal amiodarone side effects if not administered properly. The medication is again mostly administered inside a hospital and rarely so out of the hospital supervision. This is because the drug is to be used in systematic and watchful conditions of a cardiologist as it controls the heart beats of the patient.
It is seen that the reason for heart failure and heart attacks or symptoms of heart problems arise out of abnormal heart beats. In such cases the drug should be so capable as to keep the heart at functioning level as normal as possible. In the drug market amiodarone is a specialist medication used for controlling the rhythmic beat of the heart.
What is Amiodarone about?
The amiodarone drug is taken by patients when they experience irregular heart beat. The medicine is used only in case of emergency and life threatening situations. It is therefore very helpful in the treatment of ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. A doctor’s advice is mandatory while taking the medication.
The medication is prescribed by doctors and should not be taken as a self medicated drug due to its powerful actions on one of the most important part of the body namely the heart. The amiodarone acts on patients who are suffering from heart rhythm disorders of the ventricles. The ventricles are the lower chambers of the constantly pumping heart that allows blood to flow out from the heart to other parts of the body.
Sometimes, the rhythm is not sound enough for the normal functioning of the heart and the same could lead to serious problems of the heart and the patient has to be treated immediately. Under such circumstances the patient experiences pain or some kind of difficulty and taken to hospital where amiodarone is administered. Amiodarone side effects is too serious to be ignored while administering the drug as there can be fatal to moderate problems associated with it.
Amiodarone as a systematic dosage for heart problems
In the modern world of stressful living the most affected organ of the human body is the heart. Since, the heart is at work round the clock it therefore requires an impetus in the form of smooth flow of blood into it as well exit out of it through the ventricles. Any disorder in this smooth flow will prove to be fatal as the patient then is said to be in a critical state.
In such emergency state the patient is constantly monitored by the medical team and the one medicine that brings certain hope and relief to the patient’s pitiable condition is the amiodarone. However, the patient who has been brought in due to abnormal rhythm of the heart has to be put under observation while the medication is given. His or her history of diseases and illness has to be explained to the doctor for then only she or he can give the correct dosage or a mix of other medications.
The drug is usually avoided if the patient is allergic to it or if he or she has a past history of slow heart beats. The latter is usually known as AV block and apart from this it is seldom given to woman who is pregnant as it could harm her baby.
A range of tests are also carried out if the drug is administered and this could be because it can create amiodarone side effects. In fact, the patient may be advised to take a thyroid test or a liver test whichever or both if they are a suspect in the eyes of the doctor. Then there is a necessity to conduct a detailed eye scan or tests and chest X-rays. Special tests are too carried out if the patient is an asthmatic patient or has lung disorder, low on potassium or magnesium in the blood. Under such medication driving, operating machineries or active work is to be avoided as these may make things even more complicated.
Amiodarone Side Effects
In a previous post, I have spoken about clonidine side effects. There is a full post dedicated to side effects of amiodarone. There are various types of side effects when the amiodarone is administered on the patients. All are quite serious enough although while comparing some may look a little less serious. Among the serious ones are the worsening irregular heart beats, slow or fast pounding heartbeats, patient feeling that he or she may pass out, wheezing, chest pain and cough. Then in some patients they experience blurred vision, momentary vision loss, and headache, gaining weight or losing weight thinning of hair, irregular menstrual periods and increased sweating.
Minor problems like nausea, vomiting, fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay colored tools and jaundice are quite common and come under the serious side effects. In the lesser types of side effects one can experience the feeling of dizziness, sleep problems, general weakness and redness under the skin.
While taking other medicines a doctor has to be consulted for amiodarone reacts adversely with a number of drugs and can affect the person seriously. Another point that has to be noted by the patient is to avoid standing under direct sunlight or artificial UV rays as this may increase the problems.
Grapes and grape juice must be avoided as studies have revealed that they have a tendency to interact negatively with the drug and can cause amiodarone side effects.
In the next post, I will talk about dilaudid side effects.
