Allopurinol Side Effects

This drug is primarily used to treat excess urine from the body and allopurinol side effects can be quite serious if there is no proper monitoring of the symptoms. If there is an increase in uric acid then this can lead to the formation of stones in the kidney and so also gout. It is seen that although the medication may not be able to remove acute attacks of gout it can however be used to prevent future such attacks.

Gouts are inflammation formed in the joints and can be extremely uncomfortable and painful for the patients. This drug is seen to be quite effective in treatment of both these conditions.

Usage of allopurinol on patients with chronic symptoms

This medication is usually prescribed to reduce the production of uric acid in the human body. It is usually seen that the excess uric acid in the system leads to gout or stone in the kidney. The administration of allopurinol is a complex one and requires continuous monitoring.

The medication is indeed powerful enough as it has the potential to stop the excess uric acid out through the urine and out of the system. In this way a lot of toxic wastes and harmful substances are actually ridden out of the body through this process. This process reduces the stock of uric acid in the blood plasma thereby giving the body an immunity to fight dangerous diseases.

Allopurinol side effects can be treated at early stages while in more serious cases hospitalization would be required. It also takes the medication several days before the results show. Alcohol is one of the most dangerous combinations to have with allopurinol and any patient who is addicted to the same must immediately report to the doctor. The doctor in all possibility would stop the drug intake.

The main reason for such stoppage of the drug is because when combined with alcohol can make the patient’s condition even worse and he might be admitted for round the clock observation.

Advantages of allopurinol drug in taming excess uric acid

The advantage that the medication has over the other similar remedies is that allopurinol is not an uricosoric medication and as such can be given to patients who have by nature poor kidney function. The other medicines due to their power to produce increased excretion of uric acid in the urine may exert greater pressure on the kidneys to do this action.

However, in the case of allopurinol this problem does not arise as any person with a functioning kidney can take the treatment. Again, studies have stated that the medicine is also used in patients with chronic kidney diseases. It acts on the patients with chronic kidney disease and slows down the otherwise rapid progression of the renal disease. This it does by decreasing the C-reactive protein.

Further, the medication is effective in reducing the cardiovascular diseases in patients too. Yet the two major disadvantages with this medication are that its dosing stages are too complex and many cases the patients are hypersensitive to the drug. Allopurinol side effects can appear when the dose is continued on such patients.

The medicine has been treated effectively on patients while treatment of cancer is being carried on. In spite of the other medicines, the drug would be able to tackle the problem of excess uric acid on the patient’s body. The dosage is to be taken with full glass of water. It is again a must for the patients to consume at least eight to ten glasses of water everyday as it helps in reducing the risk of kidney stone formation.

Yet there are a few dangers on continuing with the drug as allopurinol can arrest the production of white blood cells which is a must for maintaining the body’s immune system. In fact, it is the white blood cells that fight infections.

What are the main allopurinol side effects

In a previous post, I have spoken about the estradiol side effects. In case of allopurinol , although side effects are rarely found in the body of healthy patients yet once they appear it can mean only one thing and that is the health of the patient needs watching. In fact, many side effects do not appear immediately, but from the symptoms the doctor can diagnose the problems with the medication still continuing on the patient.

The patient sometimes bleeds the moment a slight injury takes place on parts of his or her body. This would mean that the white blood cells are not able to perform at their best levels and thus the body’s immune system is being attacked by other antibodies and substances.

It is not known whether the medication would harm an unborn child yet it is better for the mother to avoid breast feeding the child as the drug can pass through the milk. Continued intake of allopurinol can bring side effects for which the doctor’s advice must be sought at once.

Among the serious side effects are the fever, worsening of renal function, skin rash, pain and bleeding when the patient tries to urinate, general stomach pain, passing low quantities of urine, body is subject to easy bruising and muscle weakness. Although the list is not exhaustive allopurinol side effects can be diagnosed by an experienced doctor.

In the next post, I will focus on cozaar side effects.
